How to dress for a tour in the Moroccan desert?

Going on a trip to the Moroccan desert is a must for adventurers and lovers of dunes and thrills; it’s a life experience that is incredibly rewarding. However, when traveling to the desert, it’s essential to be well-equipped and prepared for various situations. One of the most common questions before starting this adventure is: how should you dress for a tour in the Moroccan desert? Here, you will find all the information you need to prepare for your departure and ensure a pleasant stay in the heart of the sand dunes of Merzouga or Erg Chegaga.

What do you wear to the Sahara Desert?

The basic rule is to wear comfortable clothing made from natural fabrics like linen and cotton in light colors to avoid attracting the sun's rays. While it may seem strange, it’s preferable to wear outfits that help regulate your body temperature during your stay in the desert. So, consider wearing long sleeves during the day.

For the night, bring a windbreaker jacket; you’ll need it for those delightful moments around a campfire before you settle into your sleeping bag.

Additionally, keep in mind that your camel ride can last up to an hour. To ensure comfort, avoid wearing shorts and opt for comfortable jeans instead. The rough texture of camel fur may be bothersome, and trousers will better protect your legs.

When it comes to footwear, your main route to the dunes will typically be camel-back, but if you want to enjoy the sensation of walking on the sand (which is indeed very pleasant), choose sports shoes or hiking boots, or even comfortable sneakers. If you prefer sandals, make sure they are sport-specific sandals.

    Don't forget your Sahara Shawl

Before starting your trip to the dunes, you will certainly visit local regional souks, and the Sahrawi shawl will not go unnoticed. It's a must-have for a 100% desert look. Additionally, it will be incredibly useful for blocking both the sun and dust, as it can also serve as headgear to protect your head from sunburn. If you don't know how to wear it, don't panic! Just ask your local guide for help; he will gladly assist you.

    Other Hygiene Products

In addition to your clothing for a trip to the desert, consider bringing some hygiene products, especially if you plan to spend the night in tents under the beautiful stars. Wet wipes will be incredibly useful for your hygiene, as well as sunscreen to protect you from the sun. Indeed, temperatures often exceed 30 degrees Celsius, and sunscreen is indispensable. For those who are particularly sensitive, it is better to wear opaque clothing, as sunscreen may not be sufficient.

Also, remember to bring eye drops and physiological saline solution for your nose.
