Brief history of the city of Marrakech

Among its treasures, Marrakech, ten centuries old, is proud of its glorious past. Founded around 1062 by Youssef Ibn Tachfine, head of the Almoravid dynasty (1061 – 1106), it deposed Fes, its eldest daughter, of its title of capital under the reign of the first Idrisid dynasty which fell around 1049. It is said that the name Morocco derives from Marrakech which, between different versions, the Berber word tamourt means land, and Kuch means God and men expressed their attachment to the land by calling themselves Mour or Maure. The association of the Mour or Maure with Kuch (God) resulted in Marrakech. The rise of this city began around 1130 by becoming an important trading post linking sub-Saharan Africa to coastal cities. This commercial activity also included the exchange of gold from Sudan. Apart from its decline around 1200 and which lasted about 250 years, each of the dynasties that succeeded, Almoravid, Almohad, Saadian, of which it was the capital at certain times, contributed to writing a chapter in the great History of the Pearl of the South by erecting historical buildings while developing commercial activities and the manufacture of skins, terracotta, wood, iron, etc., and other craft activities.

Nowadays, the city of Marrakech can be given a double history, the ancient and the contemporary, because if its roots are buried in previous centuries, its leaves are in the present and project themselves into the future in Morocco in motion harmoniously combining tradition and modernity. Undisputed tourist capital, warm and welcoming, rich in its precious historical and cultural heritage, it hosts many festivals around the arts, cinema, music, ceremonies and other sporting events, forums around defined themes, international meetings.
